An Asian Community in an International Context
When you put a culture in an international context, it means there are more than two cultures meeting each other. These two cultures may face the issue of conflicting with each other, or one culture being assimilated by another culture. This issue becomes more severe when it comes to Chinese culture, because Chinese culture is a very strong culture. How to maintain the identity of Chinese culture and how to interpret this culture in order to make it easier acceptable by people with other cultural background has become a concern. This thesis is trying to design a cultural complex which can evoke the sense of belongingness of Chinese living in America but also, welcome all the residents of different cultural background to come in.
The design faces three challenges: how to make the design consistant with the site, how to interpret Chinese culture with architectural language, and how to make it Chinese but also International.
